Professional Comments: (From Matthews AJ) I have practised law for 38 years, the last 23 at the independant bar. Prior to  that I had extensive experience in all  aspects of transactional law.I specialize in civil litigation, principally in the High Court, and have appeared successfully at every level including the  Supreme Court. I have wide  experience before a range of  statutory tribunals, and with white collar crime.I am an experienced Resource management commissioner, and chaired a statutory tribunal  for 15 years. I have been a director of a number of companies including Marac Finance. I am also available to peer review and advise on current litigation.

 

Background / Education: Associate Judge Matthews graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Canterbury in 1972. He practised as a solicitor at Lane Neave in Christchurch, where he was a partner from 1975 to 1987, when he joined the independent bar.
As a barrister Mr Matthews has practised mainly in the civil area. He is an experienced resource management commissioner and was the Chair of the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal from 1998 to 2004. Mr Matthews has also served on a number of Law Society committees and the Council of the New Zealand Bar Association.
