|Professional Comments:||Justice White was previously involved in three Government inquiries and provided legal advice to the Commission of Inquiry into Police conduct. Douglas White, QC, is the son of the late High Court judge Sir John White, and the nephew of the late chief justice Sir Richard Wild. Justice White’s grandfather was also a leading lawyer. His cousin, John Wild, is also a Court of Appeal Judge, having been appointed to the club a year before White J.Justice White provided “independent” legal advice to former Judicial Conduct Commissioner Ian Haynes in dismissing misconduct complaints against judges before being appointed to the High Court bench.
Douglas White’s rise through the ranks has been meterioc and is difficult to credit beyond the nepotistic nature of judicial appointments which is pervasive in New Zealand.
Colleagues relate that Justice Douglas White is parsinomious and has acquired significant personal wealth. They also have expressed concern he is not objective when it comes to his own interests and personally tends to be hypocritical.
