|Postion & Titles:||Former President of the ADLS (2000-2001), Vice-President of
the NZLS (2002)
|Judge of:||High Court, Assoc. judge, since 2003|
|Specializations and Professional Interests:||Company law. Women’s issues|
|Professional Comments:||By most appearances, conscientious and committed to appropriate application of the law. However, Judge Sargisson is widely regarded as lacking the legal skills or intelligence of almost all her judicial peers. The consequence is invariably an unjust result.
One reporter called Sargisson AJ ‘the court cleaner’ in an irreverent association to the position he considered her most suited. Her relative high judicial ranking is a sadder testament to the tendency to promote judges from the back of the legal herd in New Zealand rather than any admirable personal or professional traits Associate Judge Sargisson possesses.
|Background / Education:||A Senior Solicitor with Russell McVeagh during its heyday, before corruption and scandal were to decimate the firm, Associate Justice Sargisson spent the last 20 years with Brookfields Lawyers before her appointment as a Master (now Associate Judge).
A founding member of Auckland Women Lawyers Association, Inc., Sargisson has been actively interested in women’s issues particularly in relation to the law. One of the most memorable papers that Hannah took at law school was one taught by Margaret Wilson titled “Women and the Law”. This controversial paper, with its one male student in a classroom of females, exposed her to debate about women’s issues and the need for gender equality in the law.
Coincidentally, it would be Margaret Wilson who would later appoint Sargisson to the High Court bench. Master of the High Court of New Zealand she deals predominately with pre trial, company and insolvency matters.
