S-G Collins appointed to High Court

Solicitor General David Collins was appointed to the Wellington High Court bench last week despite widespread concerns of his character amongst the legal fraternity and amid evidence he had repeatedly misled the courts as a private lawyer and in his capacity as the highest practicing law officer in the land.

Legal pundits speculate this is why Collins was appointed a High Court judge when his predecessors John McGrath and Terrence Arnold were appointed directly to the Court of Appeal.  The appointment was followed by rare criticism in the NZ mainstream press of how judges are appointed in New Zealand.
