In the ‘funny if not so true’ category, former Law Society “watchdog” Duncan Webb has been appointed covener of the Ethics Committee of the New Zealand Law Society.
Webb was the first Legal Complaints Review Officer - a statutory position which replaced the Lay Observer as oversight reviewer of Law Society decisions. The statutory requirement was for the LCRO to be independent and ‘not a lawyer’. Webb’s shock resignation in early 2010 came amid revelations he had left a post on a Law Society committee to accept the position and was still practising law. Within days of his resignation, Webb was back on a Law Society committee - as well as sending out letters claiming to legally represent the new LCRO.
Ethics. Yeah, right.
The incestuous legal merry-go-round

The typical New Zealand judicial appointee is a rich blend of malevolence tempered by incompetence.
