Actively advocating the retention of the Queen’s Counsel designation. Protecting the reputation of judges in New Zealand by keeping information of judicial indiscretions from becoming public. |
| Professional Comments: |
Justice Randerson exhibited a ‘hands off’ approach as Chief High Court Justice, skirting involvement when the conduct of the judges under him were questioned. When forced to, he covered up egregious corruption by his judicial peers as head of bench. This loyalty is considered within the close-knit legal community in New Zealand as the basis for his promotion to the Court of Appeal in 2009. Evidence of this was clear in Randerson’s creative dismissal of a formal complaint by a lawyer against Judge Judith Potter for ruling on behalf of her brother-in-law in a case where she failed to disclose her relationship.Perceived as a fierce protector of the Courts and its institutions. Will make up law and prone to extreme rationalisation when necessary to justify unlawful actions of judges, as he did in dismissing a complaint against perennial loose cannon Potter J when Justice Randerson was Chief High Court Judge in 2005. |
